Water is not the only way…

Bacterial vaginosis is frustrating, the smell, the discharge, feeling overly self-aware if other people can smell the scent of fish radiating from you.

Women are always advised to use only water to wash their vagina as it is self-cleaning. Which is true, there is no need for heavy scented soaps to be used.  However, with being said I found a few things which helped keep the smell at bay.

1. Using a non-scented sensitive skin bar of soap helped keep the smell at bay during the day. I used the Simple sensitive non scented soap. I would use this during my morning shower. Not only is it a great soap to use all over your body before going in with shower gel it really made me feel fresh.

2. Don’t overdo it! Yes, wash you lady parts when you shower but sometimes, we can be so disgusted with the smell we end up over washing and in return we keep disrupting the balance in our vaginas even more.

3. Take a change of undies with you. I know it can be tempting to use a panty liner but please AVOID them. It restricts the air flow making it a breeding ground for bacteria. Instead, wear comfortable, well fitted (not too tight) cotton underwear and carry a few spares with you. I would carry 3 pairs of knickers with me in a little pouch in my bag if I was out the whole day. It may seem excessive but it’s better to be over prepared.

Having reoccurring bacterial vaginosis can be annoying, but there are ways to keep the smell at bay and allow you to feel comfortable.
